Self-Esteem

Self-Esteem

Luis — I have lived in Tijuana for more than 22 years. I have talked to other disabled people like me when we have run into each other on the streets. They each had obtained a new prosthesis and they told me I could come here to obtain a replacement for the broken one I had. I had hoped to save a little money to fix it but after coming [to the Desayunador Salesiano Padre Chava shelter], I was able to obtain a refurbished one at no cost.

I lost my leg about 15 years ago when I was crossing the border into the United States. I got hit by a car along the highway. I used to work in construction. Now, I can’t carry a bag of cement or push a wheelbarrow, so I work as a night watchman. I live with my father and I make enough to pay rent and living expenses.

The new prosthesis will make me feel better. There are times when I get demoralized because of my physical condition or because of the difficult financial situation I find myself in. This will raise my self-esteem.

Thank God there are people like this who help.
